How much does a highway troubleshooting procedure cost and how is it regulated?

It's not good to break down on the highway. Over the past decade, troubleshooting rates have been rising steadily.

If there is never an ideal time to break down, there is in any case a place to avoid as much as possible: the highway. Indeed, intervention on these routes is strictly regulated. While the first reflex is to call your insurer, there is no point. Only approved companies are allowed to operate on a motorway. To contact them, use the nearest emergency call terminal.

The good news is that the law imposes a precise framework for the professional: he must arrive on the scene within 30 minutes and repair the car on site within half an hour in the event of a small breakdown. If the problem is greater, the tow truck can transport a car to the nearest garage or drop it off at a location less than 5 kilometres from the highway exit or expressway, so that insurance can take over. .

A hundred euros to pay

Legislation also regulates the rates of these specific interventions. On closer inspection, the consumer association UFC-Que Choisir found that they had increased by 15% in the space of ten years. In 2009, it was necessary to pay 113 euros for a troubleshooting on the motorway or requiring a towing. But under an order published in the Official Journal of 18 September 2019, it now costs 130.06 euros. The price rises to 160.82 euros when it comes to moving a vehicle over 1.8 tons and less than 3.5 tons. Beyond this threshold, rates are free. It should also be noted that a 50% increase is applied if the emergency call is made in the evening (between 6pm and 8am), on weekends or on a public holiday.

The advice to follow is this: as soon as the highway is left and before accepting a possible repair in a garage, it is best to contact your car insurance. Depending on the contract, the assistance guarantee can cover the cost of the convenience store, subject to providing a copy of the invoice.
